Why Calgary Couples Choose RU Dancing Academy

Wedding dance lessons in Calgary are our specialty — and our passion. Richard Tymko has helped over 500 Calgary couples create personalized, unforgettable first dances since 2004.

The RU Dancing Wedding Dance Process

  • Free consultation: Discuss your vision, song, timeline, and experience level
  • Customized choreography: Richard designs movement specifically for your song and your bodies
  • Progressive lessons: Build confidence week by week
  • Refinement phase: Polish until it feels completely natural
  • Full support: Available for questions right up to your wedding day

Tips Before "The Big Day"

  • Give yourself at least 90 days. The more time you dedicate to learning a dance, the nicer it will look.
  • Know the features of your dress. A tight mermaid dress can cause movement restrictions. Know your bustling options.
  • Your song tells a story. It determines what type of dance you'll do — if your music isn't in 3/4 time, you won't be doing a waltz!
  • Know the length of your song. The sweet spot is the 2 to 2½ minute range — we recommend 3 minutes as the maximum.
  • Feel free to contact us so we can listen to the music and make suggestions about choreography.

Planning Your Lesson Budget

Many wedding couples enrol in 6 to 12 weeks of beginner group lessons to get the basics down before committing to private lessons. The number of private lessons you'll need depends on:

  • Ability: Some will pick up dancing quickly; others take a little longer.
  • Practice time: You absolutely need to practice between lessons.
  • Your dance routine: It's far better to dance a simple routine well than a complex routine poorly. Keep it simple — it will look great!

Adam & Gloria's First Dance

"I have to say I have never seen such a fun first dance. Gloria & Adam had a choreographed routine by RU Dancing to 'L-O-V-E' by Nat King Cole that turned out perfectly!"

— Sophia Dorozio, SodoPhotography

"Richard took two people who couldn't do a single step and turned us into dancers in six lessons. Our first dance was the highlight of our entire wedding."

— Sarah & Michael, Calgary Beltline Wedding, 2024

Calgary Wedding Dance FAQ

Ideally 3–6 months before your wedding. That said, we've transformed panicked couples in as few as 3 weeks — so don't let timing stop you from calling.

Absolutely. We've choreographed to country ballads, pop anthems, classic waltzes, jazz standards, hip-hop, and everything in between.

That's exactly who we love working with. The transformation stories we hear from "hopeless" couples are our proudest achievements.

It depends on your schedule and budget. Many couples do 6–12 weeks of beginner group classes first, then switch to privates for choreography. Richard will tailor the approach either way.

The sweet spot is 2 to 2½ minutes. We recommend 3 minutes as the absolute maximum — shorter keeps the energy up and your guests engaged throughout.

Yes — our Platinum package includes parent dances and bridal party routine choreography. These can also be added to any package. Get in touch and we'll put together exactly what you need.
